“Internal Landscapes” reflects the artist’s practice as a process of decolonization. Speaking of these paintings, Mike Alexander says, “These works document my ongoing transformation and reclamation of what belongs to me, and in doing so, I feel a closer connection to who I am and pride in what I am able to share from a good place in my heart.”
Mike Alexander is an emerging Anishinaabe artist originally from Swan Lake First Nation in Manitoba. He has attended the University of Victoria, the Pacific Design Academy, the Vancouver Island School of Art and the Victoria College of Art. He is honoured to receive mentorship from master carver and recipient of the Order of BC, Carey Newman (Kwagiulth). Since 2015, his large acrylic paintings have appeared in four solo exhibitions in Victoria, Vancouver and Kamloops, as well as several group shows across Canada. A student of the Woodlands School of Art, Mike proudly celebrates his ongoing transformation and reclamation and reconnection he feels with his Ojibway culture using art as a process of healing.
This event is taking place on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tseil-Waututh Nations.
